Light and Energy

Today was great because Monica decided to unwrap the candle pack on our light collection table. I asked her if she wanted to light one of the candles. "Yes!", she said. So Monica put sand in a pot for the candle to stand in safely and not fall over.

Here is the candle:
We noticed the wax was hard, wet, soft, sticky and white and running down. The string went black and fell over! The flame was yellow, high, a bit blue at the bottom, orange and hot!
We remembered that energy from the sun gives light and makes us hot. We could feel that even a small candle can be VERY hot. Then we put our hands around the flame. It was warm and it was hottest above the flame.
We could see smoke after Rusudan blew it out and Paula got black on her hands from the smut..... phew! - what a lot of new words from a small experiment! Thank You Monica for being a great inquirer and risk taker!
